Historic confirmation of the new Archbishop of Canterbury
We are delighted to share the joyful news that Dame Sarah Mullally has been officially confirmed as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury — and the first woman in history to hold this role in the Church of England’s 1,400-year tradition.
The Confirmation of Election took place on 28 January 2026 at St Paul’s Cathedral, London, a legal and sacred ceremony in which Archbishop Sarah formally assumed her new office.
Archbishop Sarah brings to this ministry a lifetime of faithful service. Before her ordination, she served as Chief Nursing Officer for England, and more recently as Bishop of London. Her leadership is marked by deep pastoral care, a commitment to service, and a prayerful desire to guide Christ’s Church with calmness, consistency and compassion.
This is a truly significant moment for the Church of England and for the global Anglican Communion. Archbishop Sarah’s ministry begins during a time of both challenge and opportunity, and we hold her in our prayers as she steps into this historic calling.
Her formal enthronement (installation service) will take place later in March 2026 at Canterbury Cathedral, when she will preach her first sermon as Archbishop of Canterbury.
Let us give thanks for this milestone and pray for Archbishop Sarah as she leads with wisdom, courage and grace.
