The inaugural lecture entitled ‘On Being Together: the Possibility of Church’ was given by Martyn Percy at Southwark Cathedral on June 20th, 2013.
Martyn Percy is Principal of Ripon College, Cuddesdon, Oxford. He is a member of the Faculty of Theology at Oxford University, a Professor of Theological Education at King’s College London and Professorial Research Fellow at Heythrop College, University of London. He is also an Honorary Canon of Salisbury Cathedral. Martyn has served in a variety of public roles specialising in ethics and consumer affairs, including the Advertising Standards Authority, the Portman Group (the self-regulating body for the alcoholic drinks industry), the Direct Marketing Commission and the British Board of Film Classification. He writes on Christianity and contemporary culture, modern ecclesiology and practical theology. His recent books include Clergy: The Origin of Species (2006) and a trilogy on ecclesiology (Ashgate) Engaging Contemporary Culture (2005), Shaping the Church (2010) and The Ecclesial Canopy (2012). He was recently described in the journal Theology as the British Theologian who is ‘closest to being a missionary anthropologist’.
